Belief-o-matic
I just took the belief-o-matic quiz over at beliefnet.com, and according to them, my top-ten list look something like this:
1. Unitarian Universalism
2. Liberal Quakers
3. Mahayana Buddhism
4. Theravada Buddhism
5. Neo-Pagan
6. Taoism
7. New Age
8. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants
9. Secular Humanism
10. New Thought
I can’t completely agree with any of them. If I ranked myself, I would say the faith I am closest to is Mahayana Buddhism. But even Buddhism at times can be too hierarchical and conflict with my belief that everyone is divine and capable of achieving mystical connections with God, timelessness or whatever you may call it.
One thing I found especially funny was the fact that Roman Catholicism, the faith on which I was raised, was ranked dead last. I’m guessing because of my tolerance for things like abortion and all that nonsense that Christians are normally against. Theologically I find myself agreeing with many things in Roman Catholicism, especially when it comes to certain Benedictine Monks like Brother Stiendl Rast. In his book The Ground We Share, there are many parallels drawn between Buddhism and Christianity. Such parallels exist across all religions, but Jesus and Buddha in particular are pretty close. I imagine they would’ve been great buddies had they ever met.
